Please help our Dad fight Cancer. At the beginning of this year, we got the news no one wants to hear. After a few months of feeling unwell and an initial diagnosis of IBS, Dad was given the devastating news that he actually has Stage 4 bowel cancer. Just when you think the news can’t any worse, the Doctor went on to explain that his Cancer had already spread to the lymph nodes around his liver and he has a rare gene mutation (BRAF V600E) where the cancer is even more aggressive and highly resistant to standard treatments. Despite this, there was still hope with Dad starting an intense course of 3 different types of chemotherapy, administered every 2 weeks. Not long after the first session of chemo, Dad became really unwell and ended up in hospital for the best part of 5 weeks. He had reacted badly to one of the chemotherapy drugs. During his time in the hospital he had another CT scan which showed the cancer had grown significantly in a very small space of time. Having spent so long in hospital and needing time to recover, Dad was now about 6 treatments behind. As you can imagine this was extremely worrying, as time is everything when fighting something as evil as Cancer. While Dad was stuck in hospital, we found a specialist bowel surgeon to explore every possibility to keep our much loved Dad alive. Surgery was looking promising until COVID 19 struck. All intensive care beds were earmarked for Covid, leaving Dad without the option of surgery. In late March Dad had recovered enough to give chemo another go but this time with only two out of the three drugs. Dad managed to bravely sit through 6 rounds of chemo but after the last round came more complications. The cancer has continued to grow so much that it was causing a blockage in his bowel. On Sunday 7th June, Dad had an operation to fit a colostomy bag and after another week, isolated on his own in hospital, he was finally able to come home. On Monday 15th June, Dad received the news we had all been dreading.. his Oncologist explained that they will no longer be continuing with chemotherapy due to it not working. Our Dad sunk in his chair and our hearts dropped. Dad is an extremely special man, who has always put others before himself. He is truly selfless and even through these testing times which have seen him become extremely weak, frail and in great pain, he has not moaned or complained and continues to try and care for us all as he always has. Dads caring loving nature is reflected by the fact that he is held in such high regard by everyone that knows him. The final ray of hope that we have as a family is a new cancer treatment that only successfully finished trial in May. Dad’s Oncologist explained that it is designed specifically for patients with the BRAF gene mutation, like our Dad. Unfortunately these drugs are years off being cleared for use on the NHS, meaning the only way we can access these drugs is to pay £10,000 a month.
